“…a treasure trove…”
- Tessa Allingham, Journalist & Writer
In An Englishman’s Cookery Journey Richard Freeman invites the reader to join him on an imaginary journey from Aldeburgh to Aix-en-Provence during which he taught himself to cook.
The book contains entertaining reminiscences of how he became involved in food and wine and leads on to a collection of recipes which he has learnt to cook well, thus providing interesting and enjoyable food for his family and friends. Contemporary in its approach, the book emphasises the importance of responsible farming and fishing and a healthy diet. Through its recipes it celebrates the lovely foods of Suffolk and the renowned cuisine of Provence.
Beautifully illustrated with many original paintings by the celebrated Suffolk artist Tessa Newcomb, together with delightful drawings by Jason Gathorne-Hardy and a charming watercolour by Karen Freeman, this covetable volume will not only amuse and educate but will inspire others to follow by learning to cook.
Ultimately, the author invites his readers to imagine they are joining him for a glass of wine at the famous café, Les Deux Garçons, on the Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence where he hopes that in conversation together they would all agree that the long journey on the cookery road had been worthwhile.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Tessa Newcomb was born in Suffolk and studied at Bath Academy of Art (1973-76), returning to Suffolk where she has painted ever since. She mainly paints East Anglian subjects but also enjoys evoking the excitement of city life, especially in Paris. She has regularly exhibited at London’s Crane Kalman Gallery for many years, at the Alde Valley Festival and other galleries around the country.
Jason Gathorne-Hardy learnt to draw and paint in Suffolk, Spain and Austria, using graphite and earth pigments from the landscape. In 1995 he studied under Maggi Hambling in London and is now well known for his studies of farm animals and birds. He has exhibited in Suffolk and London and in 2005 he founded the Alde Valley Festival that celebrates food, farming, landscape and the arts.
Karen Freeman is married to the author and is a keen amateur watercolourist in her spare time.
